Interdisciplinary Practice

T5

24 June, 2024

I am interested in exploring lenticular 3D photography using specialized printing and software such as Photoshop and interlacing software to create images. I intend to utilize this technology to capture photographs of the interior of libraries and portraits of librarians to showcase the current state of libraries in the UK. I aim to evoke a ghost-like, emotional effect by blending reality and imagination while conveying the loss associated with libraries and all they offer.

My project relates to various disciplines, such as art, technology, science, sociology, and literature. It aims to provide innovative ways to engage viewers and offer new perspectives through its multifaceted nature and interactive qualities.

Lenticular photography is a holographic technique that allows the simultaneous viewing of multiple images, creating a three-dimensional illusion without stereoscopic glasses. This technique is commonly used in visual arts and design to create a sense of motion and to explore themes such as transformation, perspective, and time. Additionally, I would like to create montages using archival images of libraries to explore these same themes.

I am also researching VR photography and exploring the necessary equipment and post-production software. VR photography lets viewers virtually experience an environment in person. This is different from traditional or lenticular photographs. VR photos allow me to capture a complete spherical or 360-degree view of a scene, creating an immersive and interactive experience for individuals exploring the interiors of libraries in my images.

My practice

In my current photography practice, I draw on the disciplines of art, sociology, psychology, and the environment. I want to emphasize the word "relates" here, just as my approach to a specific photographic practice involves a personal dedication to a particular photographic style or identity.

Sociology

My practice involves taking pictures of candid moments in public places. I aim to capture images that depict societal conditions, cultural norms, and social interactions through a sociological approach. This practice creates a visual story of social interactions, cultural diversity, and people's everyday experiences in various communities. Shown below is an image I took on 2 June at my local community church.

Art

In her book "On Photography," Susan Sontag discusses the role of photography in the broader context of artistic expression and its influence on visual art. As an art form, photography requires understanding visual aesthetics, composition, and creative expression. In my practice, I experiment with light, shadow, colour, and form to capture images. During my college years, I studied History of Art. Various art movements and techniques have influenced my approach to art. For instance, I draw inspiration from Johannes Vermeer, a renowned Dutch painter recognized for portraying domestic interior scenes depicting middle-class life during the Baroque era.

Environmental Studies

Environmental photography captures the natural world and human interaction with the environment. My practice includes documenting landscapes, ecosystems and environmental issues such as pollution and climate change, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of ecological conversation and education. Photographer Edward Burtynsky's

work carries a powerful environmental message. He documents the extensive alteration of natural landscapes to raise awareness about the environmental costs of industrialization.

Through his photography, he emphasizes the scale of industrial activity and its devastating effects on the environment. For example, his images of the tar sands in Alberta, Canada, reveal a landscape dramatically transformed by industrialization. These images make the viewer question oil extraction's sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Psychology

Photography is inherently linked to psychological processes, both for the photographer and the viewer. My practice often delves into identity, memory, and emotional themes, exploring how images can evoke psychological responses and introspection. Through portraiture, I aim to capture the essence of individuals, exploring their personalities, emotions, and inner worlds. This practice is rooted in psychological concepts of self-representation and the impact of visual imagery on self-perception.
